Find out what you need to submit, what previous studies meet the general entry requirements, how to meet the English requirement and any special instructions for your country of study.

Meeting the general entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry to a Master's programme is a Bachelor's degree (hons) of at least 480 SCOTCATS/SCQF points.

Students holding only an ordinary, pass, condoned pass or compensated fail degree will not satisfy the entry requirements for a Master's programme.

Meeting the English requirement

You can meet the English requirement with your upper secondary studies with Standard Grade.

If you’re documenting your English based on your upper secondary studies, you must provide documentation demonstrating you meet the requirement. Please submit your upper secondary documents as indicated for bachelor’s level studies.

You can also demonstrate that you meet the English language requirement through your university studies. If the language of instruction for your bachelor's programme was English, you can document this with your degree certificate and transcript. Other documentation is not required.

General document requirements

In order to complete your admissions application, you must provide the following documents so they arrive at University Admissions by the deadline.

1. Certificates and diplomas of your completed degree(s) from an internationally recognised higher education institution.

The certificate/diploma must be officially issued by a representative of the Academic Registrar's Office, the Examinations Office, or the equivalent office that issues official transcripts of records at your university.

2. Transcripts of completed courses and grades for each semester included in your degree. If you have had courses credited/transferred from previous studies, you must also submit official transcripts for those courses.

It's important you check your university's website for information regarding the specific entry requirements for the course or programme you have applied to and any other documentation they may require, such as dissertations, essay summaries, letters of recommendation, or letters of intent. Please do not submit any additional documentation unless it is specifically requested by the university.

5. In order to speed up the processing of your application, we require a copy of the page in your passport with your personal data and photograph, or some other identification document.

Translation requirements

You must always submit your certificate/diploma and transcripts in the official language of the country where you studied.

For your certificate/diploma

If the issued language is not Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, English, French or German, you must also provide an official translation. Official means that your translation must be completed by a translation company or a person who works as a translator. This translation should be in Swedish or English.

Special document instructions

Your Transcript of Records and Degree Certificate must be issued by a recognised body, usually a University, not your College/School Department, and it must be signed and stamped by the recognised body.

If your degree includes accredited transfer credits, full documentation of the whole Bachelor education (including Accredited Previous Learning, APL) must be included. If your APL comprises more than one year (120 CATS), the APL must also be listed in the Transcript of Records issued by the degree-awarding institution.

Diploma supplement

A diploma supplement is not required when applying to studies in Sweden. However, if you have a diploma supplement, it alone cannot be used as proof of your degree. Your diploma supplement together with your degree certificate is acceptable in place of an official academic transcript, if courses and grades are clearly stated. The students name and/or reference number must be written on every page of the diploma supplement.

Your name and birthdate must match on all documents

In order for your documents to be accepted:

  • the name and birthdate provided must be the same on all your documents (ID, transcripts, degree certificate, etc.)
  • the name on your documents must match the name you reported in your account at Universityadmissions.se

If the names are different, you must provide us with documentation (for example, a marriage certificate if you've been married) as to why they don't match.

If the birthdate on any of your documents is different from your passport, the difference must be explained with official documentation or an affidavit explaining the discrepancy.

Incomplete documentation

It is your responsibility to ensure that you have read and understood the application requirements and have gathered and submitted all the necessary components of the admissions application by the deadline.

Verification

University Admissions in Sweden checks the authenticity of your documents with the issuing institution. University Admissions in Sweden reserves the right to revoke admission if supporting documents are discovered to be fraudulent.

Submission of false documents is a violation of Swedish law and is considered grounds for legal action.

Information regarding Brexit

The United Kingdom formally left the European Union on 1 February 2020. This has resulted in some changes regarding the application and tuition fee requirements for British citizens and their families. 

There were rules that applied during the transitional period, and rules for after that period was concluded.

During the transitional period

A transitional period was put in place until 31 December 2020. During this time, British citizens and their family members continued for the most part to have the same rights as they had before. Among other things, this meant that they were exempt from paying application and tuition fees for higher education studies in Sweden.

After the transitional period

The transitional period expired on 31 December 2020. Currently, British citizens and their family members designated in article 10 of the Withdrawal Agreement - those who exercised their right to reside in a Member State before the end of the transitional period, and continue to do so - are not required to pay application and tuition fees.

British citizens not covered by the Withdrawal Agreement - or any other fee exemptions - are required to pay both application and tuition fees starting 1 January 2021.

Required documentation from 1 January 2021

If you're covered by article 10 of the Withdrawal Agreement, you'll need to document your status in order to not pay the application fee. 

From 1 December 2020, you can apply for residence status for British citizens with the Swedish Migration Agency. When you receive your residence status, scan the original document verifying your status and upload it to your account here at Universityadmissions.se.

If your residence decision has not arrived

If you've applied for but haven't yet received your residence decision, please scan and upload the following documents in order to document your status:

  • a scanned copy of the certificate indicating that you have submitted an application for residence status for British citizens with the Swedish Migration Agency
  • an identification card in which your British citizenship and address in Sweden are included
